Stages of a Photographer Graph

So I found this pretty funny graph of a typical photographer's career, so I thought I'd share it with ya'll. Unfortunately I couldn't get it big enough for the text to be legible, so here's the link. Check it out!

Spring Break Pics

So, here are a few photos that I took over Spring Break, just for fun and to play with the white balances on my camera some. They're just things around my house. The images have not been altered or manipulated, just basically straight from my camera. Comment on them and tell me what you think of them if you want. And I have more if anyone is interested and wants to take a gander at the rest of 'em; just let me know.

Hello All,
I found this interesting blog entry (?) that I wanted to share with everyone. I thought it might be helpful to some, but it might be common sense to others. Anyway, here it is:

making a photo

I came across these photos on found and thought they were interesting examples of made photos even though they use toys. Sorry I don't have the artist name.

Color Correcting in CS4

James our T.A. taught me and others a way of color correcting that helps in getting your photo to the perfect color balance so I thought I would type it up and share it with the whole class. Hope these instructions make sense, and if not comment and I will be sure to explain further!! Hope this helps in your color balancing techniques!!

Color Correcting-

-Make a copy of your original picture and create a new layer
-Go to edit, then fill, and make sure Use is 50% gray (shortcut to get here is F5)
-Make sure blending is normal and opacity is 100, than click ok
-Double click your background copy to get to layer styles
-Go to blend mode and pick difference then hit ok
-Go to the half moon icon (the circle that is half black and half white) and click threshold
-On the threshold slide icon to the left and then start moving back to the right until gray starts to appear. Hit shift and click to make your point on the gray area.
-Throw layers away
-Click the half moon icon again and go to threshold to move your icon again. To the left is your black point; to the right is your white point. Shift and click to make your points.
-Throw the layer away
-Go back to half moon icon and go to curves. There you have the three eyedroppers and you click your black, white and gray points. Do your black and white first, then the gray.
-Hit shift, and option to click on the points to cut them out of your picture.

* This works best if your photo is in RAW format. If your photo is already color balanced fairly well, this won’t change it very much. And sometimes this may only get you to a good starting position in order to add contrast or minor color corrections.

Good luck on the upcoming project!!!! :)

Mystery Bird

This is basically aimed at Jon, the raptor biologist, but I am open to other opinions on what kind of hawk this is. I've narrowed it down to a hawk. Not a sparrow, not an eagle, not a duck.

Hubbard & Birchler

I've been looking at a lot of different artists work lately and just thought I would share with you these artists, whose work I thought was kind of interesting. I felt like it tied into the "making a picture" theme that we have for our current assignment.

Panoramic Photography

I have never tried to create a panoramic photo before, but during my trip to Laguna Beach over President's Day weekend I decided to give it a shot. I used my dinky little Nikon point and shoot camera and it actually turned out pretty well.
Also, I found it surprisingly easy to stitch them together using the Photomerge option in PS. This photo was a series of three different photos, I just made sure each photo overlapped a little in order for them to be stitched together. If anyone hasn't tried this yet, you should give it a shot! :)

Al Magnus

I was introduced to Al Magnus while trying to think of ideas for this project. He really inspired me to think of my ideas, and so if anyone is having a creative block you should check him out!! There is also a list on his site of artists he was also inspired by, so lots to check out!!

Light Camera Trigger

Sometimes I like to consider myself thrifty and save money building my own things instead of buying expensive versions found elsewhere. My current list of things include my camera sling strap, camera cord trigger, and now most recently I've made a light trigger for my camera. The image to right shows the basic breadboard prototype. Basically the important part is the Light Dependent Resistor. The Arduino prototype board reads the value of sensor any anytime it drops to a certain value (or darkness) then it triggers the camera.

Where I plan to use this is in conjunction with a laser pointer and doing precision photography such as the typical photo you'd see with the water droplet hitting water but taking the guess work out. I've add in a potentiometer to control the delay of the photo to dial in the timing.

I plan to fully solder this into a board so that I can just drop it on top of the Arduino anytime I want to use it instead of dealing with the tangle of wires. Also I'd like to add in a display to show the exact time delay. This design is very flexible and can potentially be use with any sensor including sound, heat, or motion at a very trivial cost. Altering the code would be simple.

BTW if anyone has a laser pointer or old LCD alarm they want to get rid of please let me know. =D

If anyone is curious, on the other end of the camera cable is a 3/32" connector standard to other canon remotes.

Stumped? Kick it old school

Hey everyone,
This assignment reminded me a lot of an artist I was introduced to in 251, Jerry Uelsmann, and I thought that if anyone was still stumped on maybe that 5th print or something, his work would be good to check out for ideas. I don't know if anyone has heard of him or had seen his work in 251 as well, but I think his photos are one of the best examples of photo montaging, except he did his work in the dark room instead of in Photoshop, which is one of the reasons why I think they are amazing. Check it out ;)

Wanna see more?:

Good luck montaging everyone! Can't wait to see all the great prints on Monday... :)

ehh hdr

this is a not so serious hdr tutorial I thought was funny.
Nolan Nitschke (Nitschkephotography.com) has a eye for current trends and I think it just sort of pisses him off.

check out his site, he has some of the best landscape photography on the web.

Rocky Mountain School of Photography

I received a pamphlet in the mail from the Rocky Mountain School of Photography. They have a one- or two-day workshop in Boise on 27-28 March. Compared to other workshops I've seen advertised, it's very inexpensive ($129 for one day, $179 for two). They give a $20 discount for groups of 5 or more for the 2-day workshop and $10 for the 1-day workshop.

Anyone interested?
Here's the link: http://www.rmsp.com/weekends/weekendcontent.aspx?wid=110&prog=14

Teacher, have you heard about this outfit? Would you recommend them or have any comments about photography workshops in general?

Light Paint Typeset

I've got another video for everyone. This one is from last semester created to present my final project in which the goal was to create a typeset using non-traditional mediums. Although the final end product is more in line with Graphic Design, the process was very much photography oriented and why I created the video to show it. I never fully compiled it into a full usable font but intend to do so eventually perhaps even with a lowercase as well.

Bush Montage

As I was searching for images to use in a montage, I came upon this montage.

I had a similar theme in mind, but it was getting too complex. This montage is simple in design, but says a lot.

Out of Town

I will be out of town March 22. Not February 22. Class will not be canceled.
